About the Project
Why the Heritage Walk?
The Heritage Walk is a project of the people of Bundeena and Maianbar. We started this project because we wanted:
1. To tell residents and visitors about the very special place we live in. This is perhaps the most important reason. It's easy to walk through the reserves and among houses without noticing how special they are. From vegetation to man-made structures, there are many reasons why people should stop and admire or contemplate what they are experiencing. The Walk gives people an opportunity to experience past and present.
2. To give visitors and residents defined routes to walk through the villages. Lots of visitors come to Bundeena and Maianbar and wander aimlessly through the streets and even into backyards! The Walk directs them on a defined route and to the best areas.
3. To make Bundeena and Maianbar more pedestrian friendly. The motor car is gradually taking over our villages. Roads are not very pleasant to walk alongside nowadays. By establishing the Walk, we're inviting both pedestrians and drivers to slow down and have a look at our surroundings and, most important, to care about sharing the roads.
4. To look after our villages better. As part of the Heritage Walk project we plan to restore and clean up along the route. This means getting rid of unsightly weeds, getting rid of rubbish, fixing up broken steps, drains, footpaths and the like. It won't happen overnight, but with the co-operation of Council, NPWS and the community, we hope to see a gradual improvement in the way our reserves, roads and paths look.
Ongoing work
There will probably never be an end to the work that needs to be done on the Walk. There are always new ideas for enhancing its appearance and comfort. Unfortunately we will probably always have to deal with vandalism and with rubbish. Unfortunately, also, we will always be battling weeds that threaten to overcome native vegetation along the route. One of our plans is to have installations along the route of the Walk. We have many talented artists, craftspeople and tradespeople living in town. We have invited them to design seats or other installations along the route of the Walk to make the Walk an even more pleasurable experience.
